Pornography is not real. It is a fantasy we create, a fantasy of projected sexual desires. We can never be physically or intimately involved; we can only watch and daydream. Sexinstereo presents a series of digitalised stereoscopic images that explore the changing nature of sexual taboos, representation and repression. Monfries' work directly references the early nineteenth-century pornographic images that appeared soon after the advent of photography. Duplicate images are set deep within boxed wooden frames. The models and backgrounds suggest an investment in Victorian notions of sexuality and morality, while an attached band of black electrical cord links these images to the more recent world of rubber fetishes and projected sexual desire.
