In What Time Is This Place? John Billan situates his practice at the interface between the traditional and the new, further expanding his use of alternative photographic practices. Billan's focus is the construction of personal connections and associations between aspects of particular photographic histories and their contemporary re-investigation. What Time Is This Place? settles upon a particular site for the investigation of a certain type of photographic imagination: the route (both physical and mental) travelled between his birthplace and his current abode. The project positions and merges archival records, found images and personal photographs, presenting these different historical layers on the one temporal viewing plane. Here, Billan conveys a contemporary experience of relocation and rupture of memory.
