Traits uses candid and portrait photographs to portray the intimacy and complexity of a mother/daughter relationship, seeking to investigate how a sense of 'self' is constructed. In the four photographs displayed, Culpitt looks for possible clues. She includes a series of photographs in a hotel room and an early kindergarten portrait, all excerpts from the family photo album. Culpitt candidly snaps her mother ready for bed, and later, applying make-up. Alternatively, Culpitt is captured off guard by her mother, child-like and compulsive. In another image, Culpitt is shown at age four. She remembers directing the photographer at the time, consciously partaking in the construction of her own image. As Traits reveals, this interest in the formation of her own, specifically female, identity remains intent.
