Marie-Ange Guilleminot is one of the key 'new generation' artists to emerge from France in recent years. Her practice is poetic and strongly focussed upon the role and ethics of the individual. The White Transformation Parlour originated from Guilleminot's first visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, where she was profoundly moved by the origami birds made by a young Japanese girl who was a victim of the Hiroshima A-bomb. For the Melbourne International Festival Guilleminot will work with children, narrative and simple materials to create a space of ritual contemplation - inviting children to make origami cranes and participate in story-telling sessions. The cranes will form part of a growing monument commemorating the loss of children's lives as a result of war, eventually finding their way to Hiroshima, Japan.
This exhibition is presented as part of the Melbourne International Festival's visual arts program.
