Gold-toned, silver-salt photographs on salt preserved emptied duck eggs are displayed on a single wooden shelf wrapped around the room. Using antique photographic processes, Seeto creates the photochemistry of the 19th and early 20th century. The images are applied to the eggs (cherished Chinese delicacies) via basic chemical reactions involving salt and silver nitrate, the silver compounds are then converted to gold tone. Seeto's interest in silver photographic processes coincides with his interest in his family history. Since 2001, he has been collecting photocopies from his family albums. Both the photographic record and the retelling of the story degenerate and are reconstructed through time. Seeto's family came from China to Australia via Papua New Guinea (as traders) in the early 20th century. His work identifies with the individuals adaptation and change in worlds away from homelands, and is a melding together of both fantasy and harsh political and individual struggle. This is an ongoing project that will be complete when 1000 family portraits have been accumulated.
Presented in partnership with the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
