The Likes of Us constitutes a unique document of a two year project visiting boarding houses, refuges, squats, caravan parks, soup kitchens and detox centres. The resulting images graphically portray the extraordinary strength, resilience and humanity of Melbourne's homeless, revealing glimpses of determination and stoicism amongst desolation. Freelance photographer and regular contributer to The Big Issue magazine, Ilana Rose considers her project a collaboration, emphasising that the subjects of her photographs are fully aware of the intentions behind the work. They are figured as active participants in the image-making process. In this sense, Rose moves beyond the strictly journalistic, producing portraits-in-context, qualified and sanctioned by the words and willing co-operation of those portrayed.
