A personal photographic rediscovery of Bacchus Marsh and surrounds, Standstill explores concepts of imaging in relation to residential space and landscape.
Through a convergence of history and memory, McLaughlin retraces journeys. Using instruments of heightened vision, of analysis and revelation, places become once again familiar yet remain beyond reach.
In revealing recollections of the present, of narrating a forward movement amidst a transition of relocation, it is the time between instants that changes everything. The in-between, divisions between inside and outside, between what is present, what is past and what is absent.
Stereoscopic points of departure provide a glimpse into residential enclosures, peeling back a curtain behind which struggles, achievements, accidents and soon-to-be memories take place. Here deeper invisibilities exist that even the camera cannot record.
