To celebrate the International Year of the Family, the City of Marrickville commissioned photographer Ponch Hawkes to document the diversity of families living in the municipality. Using photographs and interviews, portraits of over 20 families were produced, confirming that there are many different ways of defining a family, in Marrickville, and all over Australia.
I've always been fascinated by the notion of family and how people perceived it. I love it when people have different ideas on it from me. I love it if people's experiences are different to mine. I love seeing that varied experience... People organise all sorts of ways to live, out of circumstances or choice, that are totally fascinating and appropriate to their situations.
