Excerpt from the catalogue by Stuart Koop.
If the moment of our faith in representation has a duration, it is the distance between these two poles; the duration of consensus which reconciles an image with experience. It's a basic tenet of realism. For example, in tromp l'oeil painting where the eye is deceived, or even in a photograph, the duration of this moment tends to zero; the image overlaps with experience in a deception or immediate recognition of the subject. But in Lowe's work, this moment is held apart with purpose to create space and time for interpretation; to convene a discussion of the symbols and signs which represent our normative beliefs.
Exhibitions by Geoff Lowe and Fiona Foley comprise the first component of a cultural exchange project between CCP and Whanki Museum in Seoul, Korea.
