STEVEN SEBRING IN THE COMPANY OF PATTI SMITH
SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER, 1.30PM
Melbourne Festival and the Centre for Contemporary Photography announce a very special Artist Talk with Steven Sebring in the company of Patti Smith.
During the filming of the documentary Patti Smith: Dream of Life, Steven Sebring became fascinated by the possessions and personal treasures that appear in the film's most intimate moments. Objects of Life is a photographic exhibition by Steven Sebring with input from Patti Smith that includes imagery of Smith's childhood dress, her beloved Polaroid 250 land camera and an ancient Persian urn containing the remains of Smith's close friend and collaborator Robert Mapplethorpe. The exhibition also features a private collection of personal belongings including everyday objects - a television, a film camera and a typewriter - along with a rarely seen oil painting by Smith. This collection represents Sebring's process of discovery in the company of a prolific artist, poet and performer.
ABOUT STEVEN SEBRING
Steven Sebring discovered photography as a teenager in Arizona. He proceeded to teach himself all he needed to know then moved to Europe to broaden his horizons. He soon established himself as a photographer with a distinct style of merging raw realism with the fantasy of high fashion. He has worked with numerous magazines and has shot campaigns for many big name companies.
It was his celebrity and artist portraiture, however, that led to his meeting and photographing Patti Smith. Upon seeing her perform he was so moved, that he encouraged her to allow him to begin filming, resulting in the 11 year film project Dream of Life.
Sebring continues his collaboration with Smith, creating the book Patti Smith: Dream of Life that chronicles the experience of filming the documentary.
